7 Positive Things You Should Say Today

7 Positive Things You Should Say Today

Your life story is an expression of who you are; the words you choose to use shape this story.  Your words create the essence of your inner culture and the core of your identity and destiny.

How have you written your story so far?  Have you put your words to positive use?  If I eavesdropped on your self-talk or your conversations with others, would I hear statements that create happiness, or statements that refute it?

Your ability to write a happy life story hinges on your language.  It is your inner and outer verbal expression that makes your joy possible and that infuses your life with purpose, meaning and vitality.

So today I challenge you to say…

1. "I have a choice"

It is not your talents or abilities, but your choices that ultimately decide your fate.

You ARE your choices.

Until you can look at yourself in the mirror and honestly say, “I have a choice.  I am here now because of the choices I’ve made in the past,” you will never be able to say, “I choose differently.”

2. "Let's get started"

You can’t build anything wonderful with ideas of what you are going to do someday.  If you want something, you have to make a little noise, declare it and then get started.

A goal is far more than a mental exercise.  In fact, without the intent of action a goal is nothing more than a lie.  Make your decisions real and present in your life; give them the time and attention they deserve.

In the end it doesn’t matter what you’re thinking, it matters what you’re doing.  Whatever you want to accomplish, it’s time to get started.

3. "I have what it takes"

The worst enemy of today is your self-doubt.  The moment you doubt whether you can do something is the moment it becomes impossible for you.

You have to believe in yourself.  You have to trust yourself.  You might be nervous, but don’t you ever let any source of negativity in the world convince you that you don’t have what it takes.

Give yourself a pep talk if you need one.  State some facts, some evidence of your greatness.  Recall your past victories.  Speak them out loud – “I aced that test.”  “I earned that big raise.”  “I ran that 5K without stopping.”  “My best friend loved my wedding speech.”  And so on and so forth…  Give a positive voice to your past victories and you will find the strength to repeat history.

4. "Hello, how can I help you?"

Generally speaking, the unhappiest people you will ever meet will be those who are utterly self-absorbed; the happiest people you will ever meet will be those who lose themselves in the joy and challenge of helping others.

Happiness is always attained by giving it away without expectation.  Those who help others are eventually helped.  You have two hands, one to help yourself and the other to help those around you.  If you can lie down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone’s day just a little brighter, you have something to smile about.

5. "Look how far I have come"

The way you move a mountain is by moving one stone at a time.  Every stone you move, no matter how small, is progress.

Sometimes it may be hard to see your progress.  Sometimes it will be frustrating when the results you seek don’t appear as quickly as you had hoped.  Still, you are advancing.  You may be moving along slowly, but you are still moving a mountain.

Achievement, after all, is an enduring process, not a single event.  To achieve any worthwhile goal you must cover a lot of ground.  You need to learn what works by trial and error.  You must explore possibilities, many of which will only show you what doesn't work.  Just keep in mind that the mistakes and setbacks are a vital part of the process.

Take a break every now and then and pat yourself on the back.  Applaud yourself for doing what needs to be done.  And be careful not to spend so much time looking at how far you still have to go, that you forget to appreciate how far you've already come.

6. "I have more than enough to be happy"

The happiest of people aren’t the luckiest, and they usually don’t have the best of everything either.  They simply make the most of everything they do have.  The reason so many people are unhappy is because they tend to look at what’s missing in their life, instead of what’s present.

Take a stand and flip the switch.  Stop wishing you had more.  Stop wishing you were somewhere else.  Stop wishing you looked like someone else.  Love your quirks enough to let them shine.  Appreciate your body and use it to it’s full potential.  Appreciate the things you have that so many others dream about.  Scream it out loud if you must:  “I am lucky to be alive!  I am happy to be me right now!  I have way more than I need and so much to be grateful for!  My life isn’t perfect, it’s just pretty darn good!”

7. "......."

That blank space denoted by “ … ” is no mistake.  That space represents silence.

Silence is soothing.  Silence is peace.  Silence is divine.

The more silent you are, the more you can hear yourself think.

Have you ever heard the silence just before the sun peaks over the horizon?  Or the hush of a country road at midnight?  Or the peaceful calm just after a thunderstorm ends?  Or perhaps you know the silence in the back of your city library, or the eager pause of an auditorium full of people when the lights dim for the main event, or, best of all, the moment just after the front door shuts and you suddenly have the whole house to yourself?

Each silent moment is different, yet all are beautiful if you listen carefully.  Leave enough space in your day to enjoy the space between the commotions.  Say nothing, think quietly, just be and breathe.

The Most Common White Lies and Why

Saturday, May 11, 2013

Everyone tells a white lie on occasion, it’s just a question of why.  Some white lies save relationships, some ease a hectic situation, and others buy us time.  The list could go on forever.  Stretching the truth is a natural component of human instinct because it’s the easy way out.  We all do it, so there is no reason to deny it.  Honestly, I think the world is probably a better place because of our white lies.

As long as we aren't hurting others or breaking the law, these innocent lies can make life more pleasant.  They can absorb potential friction between our varying personalities and vacillating moods as we nudge into one another on the quest through our daily routine.  Most of these white lies only stretch an interpretation of what the truth actually is anyways.  Given our rigid optimism to each lead a tailored ideal life, white lies simply cushion us from ourselves.
White Lies

Here’s my list of the 15 most common white lies and why we tell them:

1. It wasn't me - Because somethings just aren't worth taking credit for.

2. The table will be ready in 5 minutes - Because it sounds a lot better than 15 minutes.

3. Oh, yeah! That make sense - Because option B involves admitting that I'm clueless.

4. Thank you so much. I just love it - Because telling someone that their gift sucked would make me look like and insensitive jerk.

5. Yeah! You look great in that dress - Because it's better than being slapped.

6. Oh! Things would have been different if I was there - Because I'm superman and I can always make a difference..... or at least that's how I want others to perceive me.

7. No officer, I have no idea how fast I was going - Because claiming ignorance is sometimes better than admitting to subordination.

8. I'm 29 - Because 29 is like 20 years younger than 30.

9. Yeah, I'll start working on it ASAP - Because telling you I have 10 things to do first would just irritate you.

10. Yes! Ayya was with me last night - Because that's what friend do... we agree and ask questions later.

11. My resume is 5 pages long for a good reason - Because I'm darn good at bullshitting.

12. Man! That sucker was 10 feet long - Because anything less would be boring.

13. Yeah, I was a bad ass on my high school football team - Because I want to be seen by others in an even stronger light than I see myself.

14. I'm 21, 6'5, with a muscular build - Because you can't see me in online chat room.

15. I thought I already sent that email out. I'm sure I did - Because telling you that it was a low priority would probably hurt our relationship.

 - You can also have your say. comment below a white lie, often you tell to people -

Top 10 Animals That Have Learned to Use Language

Friday, May 10, 2013

As humans, we tend to think that we have the monopoly on this whole communication things. We’re really good at it – at least, we think we are. We certainly do it a lot. But do other species also have the capacity to use language? In the wild, animals certainly communicate with each other, like vervet monkeyswho have different calls for warnings about snakes, eagles, baboons and lions. The different calls mean the monkeys can respond appropriately to attack – taking cover from an eagle attack, finding higher ground for a snake attack. But is it language? Do animals have semantics, grammar, subtle nuances? Linguists tried to answer that question throughout the twentieth century, and came up with some interesting experiments. Find out who learned human language in our Top 10 Animals That Have Learned to Use Language.

10. Koko (Gorilla)
One of the most famous surviving primates , Koko was born in 1971 and was found malnourished in San Francisco Zoo by Francine Patterson, a linguist. Dr Patterson persuaded the zoo to let her use Koko for experiments into primate language acquisition, and now claims that Koko can use over 1000 signs and understand 2000 human words. A British journalist was granted access to Kokoin 2011 and reported that she understood the sign for “baby” and pulled a doll out of a pile of toys when showed a picture of a baby. Dr Patterson also says that Koko can create new words spontaneously – like combining the signs for “finger” and “bracelet” to mean “ring”. She has mastered communicating with her trainer, but the lack of grammar makes it uncertain whether Koko can produce actual language.

09. Chantek (Orangutan)
Chantek is a male orangutan, who has been trained by anthropologist Lyn Miles to use several hundred signs. Currently living near Zoo Atlanta he can understand spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL). Like Koko, he’s been reported to use his own compound words – combining “eye” and “drink” signs to mean contact lens solution. He apparently uses adjectives and names, even if all carers are referred to as “Lyn” (but never strangers). However, his shyness means he doesn’t perform on cue in front of strangers, so it’s hard to verify all the claims made about his prowess.

08. Nim Chimpsky (Chimpanzee)
Named after eminent linguist and psychologist Noam Chomsky, this chimp had a sad life, being raised as a human child within a family setting but being rejected and eventually being sent to a medical research facility. He moved into a Manhattan house as a newborn, under the care of Stephanie LaFarge. She reared him alongside her other children, even breastfeeding him. And during the day, he would learn ASL with the researchers at Columbia University, acquiring 125 signs. But he started getting aggressive and would bite the children at home. In 1977 he attacked a researcher and the decision was taken to finish the experiment.
Nim was sent to a primate facility at the University of Oklahoma, where he was befriended by a research assistant named Bob Ingersoll, who used signs to communicate with him. They also occasionally shared a spliff, a habit of Nim’s from New York, and Nim would sign “stone smoke time now” to ask for it. The chimp was moved again, to a medical research facility but Ingersoll later helped to rescue him and he lived in a chimp sanctuary until his death in 2000.

07. Matata (Bonobo)
Another primate studied by researchers, in this case Duane M. Rumbaugh and E. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh. Matata was trained to use a keyboard with lexigrams but never really grasped the concept. But she earns her place in animal-language history because of something else that happened in the sessions at the Language Research Center of Georgia State University. As a dominant female, Matata had stolen and adopted a son – Kanzi – from other bonobos and it was Kanzi that would provide the breakthrough.

06. Sherman and Austin (Chimpanzees)
Sherman and Austin were also graduates of the Language Research Center, studied by Rumbaugh and Savage-Rumbaugh. They were remarkable in that they could understand what was known as representational symbol learning – they could be shown a picture of a ball and go and fetch a ball from the other room. The interesting thing was that, unlike other apes, they could make a connection with a symbol and something they couldn’t see. They also planned together and co-operated, so acted more like humans than many other apes that had been observed. They did not understand spoken English, but communicated using the lexigram keyboard, with 97% accuracy. Austin died in 1998, but the other apes he lived with still remember him when seeing videos of him.

05. Panbanisha (Bonobo)
Panbanisha was the daughter of Matata and another Language Research Center ape. She was raised with a common chimpanzee, named Panzee, and the two of them were taught to recognize both spoken language and symbols. Panbanisha showed much more comprehension than Panzee, who was removed from the study after 5 years.
Panbanisha died in 2012 in a primate sanctuary and her eulogy from Duane Rumbaugh said “Her presence and competencies declared that she was someone close to our kind” and described her as “someone special”. She certainly had an unusual linguistic ability and her understanding of spoken language, rather than just symbols set her apart from the other primates studied at the center.

04. Sarah (Chimpanzee)
Born in 1962, Sarah was one of the first chimps to show some skill at using grammar. Under the supervision of David and Ann James Premack, she used a special board with plastic tokens to put together sentences including strings like “if (this happens) then (this will happen) else (this will happen)”. Other chimpanzees the Premacks worked with failed to learn even a single word, but Sarah was proficient at long sentences and using reasoning in her language. The Premacks decided to move on from chimps in 1987 and Sarah now lives in a chimpanzee sanctuary.

03. Phoenix and Akeakamai (Dolphins)
Not all language experiments have been on primates. Dolphins have long been reputed to be more intelligent than humans, so it’s perhaps inevitable that they have been a subject of experiments. Louis Herman was a pioneer of this work, at the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory and Phoenix and Akeakamai were two of his study subjects. The experiment was said to be relatively successful, but unlike the primate studies it only focused on language comprehension, not production.
The dolphins were given sentences to respond to that they had never heard before and seemed to comprehend not only the nouns but the sentence structure, for example the difference between “Frisbee hoop in” and “Hoop frisbee in”. Akeakamai in particular also showed some spontaneous responses, using her “yes” and “no” paddles.
Sadly, both dolphins died at the age of 27, both from cancer and within months of each other (a dolphin typically lives for at least 35 years). When their tankmate Hiapo also died early, there were calls for the center to close and it did in 2005, although sister organization The Dolphin Institute implies that the closure was planned as part of the “State of Hawaii’s waterfront redevelopment plan”.

02. Alex (Parrot)
Another example of a non-primate who learned to communicate, Alex was an African Gray Parrot, who was trained by Irene Pepperberg. Parrots are known for their ability to mimic humans, but Pepperberg believed that they could also talk in a more structured way. She said that he couldn’t use language as such but a “two-way communications code” including a vocabulary of 150 words, the numbers 1-7 and the names of 50 objects. He also had some mathematical abilityand could add two numbers together.
Alex, whose name derived from the phrase Avian Language EXperiment, was found dead in September 2007 of no apparent cause. His last words to Pepperberg the night before had been “You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow.”

01. Kanzi (Bonobo)
And so back to Matata’s adopted son, Kanzi. And his story is remarkable. A example to working moms everywhere. Matata undertook her lessons with Kanzi clambering over her back. As the researchers struggled to teach Matata 10 lexigrams, Kanzi played nearby. One day, in Matata’s absence Kanzi just started spontaneously using the lexigrams that his mother was failing to learn. He quickly mastered the 10 words, then around 200 more and can point to the correct lexigram in response to a spoken word.
What is amazing about Kanzi is that he was never taught to use the lexigrams and in fact, had no language training at all. He simply acquired the skills in the same way that a human child acquires language. When tested against a 2-year-old human, Kanzi performed well and he was later observed lighting matches and toasting marshmallows after asking for both marshmallows and fire when out in the woods. He also acquired ASL after watching videos of Koko the gorilla.
Though the findings of Rumbaugh and Savage-Rumbaugh were met with some cynicism from the linguistic community, it has given others hope that apes – like humans – can acquire and use real language when given the opportunity.

How to Overcome the Fear of Spiders

Thursday, May 9, 2013

1. Expose yourself and face your fears.

You must face your fear to overcome it. When there is a spider around, don't automatically smash it, run away, or scream to someone else to kill it. Take time to examine the spider, but at a distance that if it is life-threatening, you have time to do your justice to it.Some spiders look perfectly normal but can be life threatening, so keep your distance.Even those small innocent ones have been known to injure.

2. Accept and understand that spiders are a natural part of this world.

Know that spiders are everywhere, and unavoidable. You will never fully escape the presence of spiders.

3. Educate yourself on spiders.

Know which spiders native to your region of the world are harmful and know what they look like. There are very few spiders in some countries that are actually deadly. Other areas of the world have more risky varieties. For those that may be harmful, there is almost always a cure at your local hospital.

4. Learn to overcome your fearful behavior.

Spiders don't hate you because you hate them. Even though you may daily stomp away at these pests, it isn't every day that they come plunging at you meat-hungry. Don't over-react.

5. Start the process of overcoming your fear.

Have someone you trust and feel safe with buy some toy spiders and some pictures. To truly overcome your fear, you have to learn how to deal with spiders in your presence. Starting with something small like a toy or picture helps a lot. Sit near the person you trust and have them slowly and quietly take out the toy or picture and try to sit still for a couple of seconds. Each day when you feel comfortable, try to increase your time spent with the toy spider or picture. When you feel safe or comfortable enough, try touching the toy or picture. Again as time goes by when you feel even more comfortable, increase your time spent having contact with the toy or picture.

6. When you see a spider on a wall, stand far away from it and keep looking at it 'till you stop feeling scared.

Then, slowly move a little closer and stand for some time. Keep doing it till you are next to or very close to the spider. Keep in mind that it will not harm you. Then try to scare the spider away. Keep chasing it out of the window, room or whatever it is on/in. When you have done that you will feel that you are not scared of spiders anymore.

ALTERNATE METHOD

1. Determine the origin of your fear
Did a spider crawl on you when you were younger ? Did you hear a story about a spider killing someone? Things like this usually make people fear spiders.Remember when it first started and you can work from there.

2. Realize that spiders don't attack human on purpose.
They really don't. Spiders will only bite you in self-defense. Spiders are antisocial arachnids and want to be left alone.

3. Realize spiders are more afraid of you, than you are of them.
You might find this hard to believe but spiders are more afraid of us. In our eyes they have disgusting features like 8 legs and such, but in their eyes we are giants and look more intimidating. Spiders don't want to scare us, they are sometimes curious and want to see what you are. Depending on how you react you might just have a little visit, and that's it. But if you panic and try to kill the spider it will try to defend itself.

4. Look at spider pictures.
When you are more confident you could look spiders up on the internet and stare at them, you will feel uncomfortable but you will get used to it. its just a picture it can't hurt you.

5. Capture a spider.
If there is a spider in your house attempt to catch it with a glass cup, then look at it. You will obviously see how stressed out it will be and it won't look as intimidating, look at the spider and stay there until you feel more comfortable and safe. You could even talk to it, even though that sounds weird it will make you feel like you're communicating with it and that will remove some of your fear.

6. Touch a safe one.
If you are very confident, you could try and touch a non venomous and non aggressive spider (daddy long legs is your best choice, since it doesn't have fangs and its technically harmless).
